Something about him
or her!
(Note: only one of
the people below has seen what’s been written here!)
|
The Squire
|
Woad Works doesn't have a
permanent Squire and has not had one since its very early days. We’re all
very democratic (very much in the Ancient Greek model ) and generally have a
discussion when one’s needed. Very occasionally we have a slightly formal meeting,
but by and large we just trot happily on. When the occasion demands it, we
have a Squire for the Day, or Session, (or even just the dance!)
|
Chris
|
At the moment Chris is the
Foreman, so if the other dancers cock it up they can blame him for not
teaching them properly. He is also one of the musicians and sometime takes the lead in the band (basically ‘cause no-one else will,
'officially' he still holds the title of Bandmaster as well) so if the band
cocks it up, its his fault. Chris joined the side yonks ago and it is alleged
that he was once the Foreman of Bishop Gundulf’s Men (although it was a very
long time ago, and he will deny it to anyone that’s ever seen them dance). By
way of recreation each winter Chris puts away the blue and blacks up to go
out with Watling Street Mummers.(or at least he used to, but as they haven't
managed to get out for a few years he can't really say 'does'). Just to try to
impress people he also claims to be the Technical Director of
NYFTE
|
Lynn
|
Lynn joined quite a few
years ago, mainly because she liked the idea, but also partly because she was
usually at dance outs and festivals anyway, as she's Chris’s other half. (Odd
isn’t it that the bit about Chris doesn’t mention being Lynn’s other half?) Can
sometimes be found in the band wielding a big recorder.
|
Mick
|
Mick’s the Bagman and for
some one as old as that, he's incredibly fit and strong, so I won't put any
other rude things about him
|
Babs
|
Babs is the official side
tart and has been around Woad Works a long time (no I didn't mean like that,
I meant that she's been a member… no that doesn't sound right either, does
it? How about ' Babs joined Woad Works several years ago'?)
|
Mike
|
Mike's been in Woad Works
forever and is a veteran of several other sides. He's still a member of
Brackley Morris and in the winter he sometimes swaps a blue face for a black one
when he goes out with Watling Street Mummers
|
Christi
|
Whilst she’s been hanging
around with the side for years, (she hasn’t really had a choice – Chris and
Lynn are her Mum and Dad) and has played a variety of instruments in the
Band, Christi was formerly as a member of the National Youth Folklore Troupe of England (otherwise known as NYFTE) before they threw her out for getting too old. She's now
at Uni so we only see her occasionally.
|
Alex
|
Alex has been around with
the side for ages as his Mum and Dad are also Chris and Lynn. He still makes an
occasional appearance as a dancer and musician - he's a star box player . . Alex
was also a member of NYFTE
and plays for
Toothless Mary a superb Ceilidh Band (formerly known as Out of Focus)
|
Ken |
A Few years ago, just
before the season started, an unsolicited e-mail
entitled 'Blind musician' arrived. And so Ken started coming along. We'd arranged
to pick him up - Chris had suggested that if he came out of his house with an
accordion, the car should drive off and leave him behind. He did.
Fortunately the car didn't 'cos he's an excellent musician - a dance
musician who plays the accordion! |
Sheryl |
Sometimes known as 'Sheryl with an
S', because that's how she introduce herself when she came along to her first
practice, Sheryl saw us dance during the summer with another local side, went
along to try them out and then came and joined us. |
Tony |
Tony was a Woadie a long long time ago. Then
He left. Now he's back. And the side is loads better off for his having
returned. Absolutely superb dancer and author of some of our dances. |
Pam |
Pam was also a Woadie a long long time ago. Then
she left. Now she's back. As well as being a superb dancer, she can also
be found in the band with an accordion. Also dances with Stony Steppers. |
Ruth |
Signed on a free transfer from
another local side. Why go recruiting when excellent experienced dancers
come to join us! |
Keith |
Came along with Ruth. Another excellent,
experienced dancers. Keith has the longest journey of us all to practice
as he lives in Abergavenny |
Sheila |
We really don't go out
recruiting for other loacla sides that meet on a Monday, but Sheila is yet
another recent transferee. |
Matthew
|
Not actually a member of the side, but as he is Christi's and Alex's little
brother, he is often seen out with the side. He's already showing great
promise - listen to his cornet playing and see what he does if someone puts a melodeon down in front of him! |
